These practical guides connect EC and pH numbers to the decisions growers actually face. They are designed to help you pause, verify the measurement, change one thing in a measured stage, circulate, and remeasure.

A meter reading is useful context, not a complete diagnosis. Crop, growth stage, source water, temperature, meter condition, product labels, and the history of the reservoir all affect what the next step should be.

Equipment and hygiene

Triage temperature, circulation, and oxygen delivery before nutrient changes.
Clean, sanitize, and restart when the reservoir needs a trustworthy baseline.

The shared safety loop

Check water level, meter condition, units, and the recent history of the reservoir.
Compare the reading with the crop, stage, system, product label, and your established operating range.
Make one measured change in a conservative stage.
Dissolve or mix completely, circulate, allow the reading to stabilize, and remeasure.
Recalculate or decide again from the new reading. Do not assume an unmeasured remainder is still appropriate.

What these guides do not do

They do not prescribe one universal EC or pH target, diagnose plant health from a single reading, replace a product label, or guarantee a biological outcome. Source-water alkalinity and dissolved salts can materially change how a solution responds.

If a reading is extreme, unstable, or inconsistent with plant condition, stop adding products and verify the measurement and setup first.
