Product and recipe handling

Measure each product, dissolve it, and keep concentrates out of conflict.

A single fertilizer and a multi-product recipe use the same disciplined loop: identify the exact product, measure the real water volume, follow the product label, dissolve fully, circulate, measure the result, and adjust from evidence.

Single products and recipes are both valid tools

A single product may provide a complete program for a defined use, while a recipe combines several products to reach a planned composition. Neither category is automatically more precise. The correct choice depends on the crop plan, product formulation, source water, and whether the components are mapped correctly.

Use the exact label and formulation version. Similar product names can have different guaranteed analyses, density, mixing directions, or component roles. Do not substitute by package color or brand family.

Never combine concentrated parts casually

At high concentration, calcium can react with phosphates or sulfates and form material that no longer stays dissolved. Penn State Extension describes separating concentrated calcium nitrate from phosphate- and sulfate-containing stock solutions. A clear final reservoir dilution does not make direct concentrate-to-concentrate contact safe.

Keep stock concentrates in their assigned containers. Add each component separately to an adequate volume of water, following the product label's order and dilution instructions. Let one part disperse before the next when directed.

A controlled mixing workflow

  1. Confirm the recipe, growth stage, exact product versions, units, and actual working volume.
  2. Check source-water EC and relevant chemistry. A nutrient calculation cannot identify alkalinity, hardness, sodium, or chloride.
  3. Use a calibrated scale or suitable volumetric device. Do not treat spoon estimates as equivalent to weighed dry mass.
  4. Begin with water. Measure each product separately and keep measuring tools clean to avoid contaminating packages or stock tanks.
  5. Add in the manufacturer-approved order. Dissolve or disperse each part fully before adding the next. Never mix concentrates together unless the label explicitly requires it.
  6. Circulate the completed reservoir, allow temperature and meter readings to stabilize, then measure EC and pH.
  7. If correction is needed, add a conservative stage, circulate, remeasure, and recalculate from the current result. Do not blindly add a previously estimated remainder.

When the mix turns cloudy or leaves deposits

Stop adding products and review concentration, order, water temperature, source-water hardness, pH, solubility, and compatibility. Cloudiness can have multiple causes, so do not diagnose it from appearance alone. Inspect pumps, tubing, and the reservoir for material that may restrict flow.

If the tank composition is no longer trustworthy, a documented fresh mix may be safer than another correction. Use the reservoir decision guide and clean equipment between cycles as described in reservoir cleaning and sanitation.

Measurement protects the recipe relationship

For a multi-part recipe, preserve the approved component relationship when calculating an increase. Do not independently round or omit one part in a way that changes the displayed total or recipe. The mixing order can differ from the semantic ratio order; label each ingredient clearly.
